Dr Petrina Barson has many years experience in counselling patients with depression and anxiety disorders. She brings to her counselling qualities of compassion, sensitive listening, and understanding, to create a warm and safe therapeutic partnership. Dr Barson uses hypnosis as part of the therapy for some patients, and draws particularly from mindfulness-based therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Compassion-Focused Therapy, to help her patients get unstuck from unhelpful mental patterns.

A process of assessment is necessary before counselling can be commenced. This usually requires at least 2 ‘double’ (30 minute) appointments so that Dr Barson can develop an understanding of the problem in the context of the person’s life situation and strengths, and perform a mental health plan where appropriate. Please ask our receptionists for a ‘double’ appointment initially if you wish to be assessed by Dr Barson for a mental health problem with a view to counselling with her. If the decision is then made to pursue counselling with her, longer appointments (45 or 60 minutes) can be booked. Medicare rebates apply for this counselling, which are higher if a mental health plan has been performed. Dr Barson does not bulkbill for counselling except in exceptional circumstances.
